This paper reviews the Computer-Marked Assessment (CMA) facilities of Moodle from a historical perspective. It looks at the facilities provided, and how well these match what a good CMA system should offer. The paper also describes how these CMA features are implemented in Moodle as a combination of plug-ins that allow new functionality to be added easily. This paper consists of three parts. Part 1 outlines of evolution of the CMA facilities in Moodle since 2003; Part 2 summarises the current state of Moodle CMA functionality; and Part 3 considers areas of functionality that could most profitably be improved in future.
